Answer first
Classical scholars emphasize five categories of adab for the memorizer: purity (wudu when possible), intention (ikhlas), reverence (treatment of the mushaf), humility (not competing), and continuity (lifelong study, not transactional).
Purity
- Renew wudu before recitation when possible.
- Clean mouth.
- Face the qiblah when reciting for memorization.
Intention
- Renew the intention daily. The Quran deserves to be memorized for Allah’s sake, not to impress.
- Imam An-Nawawi emphasizes renewing niyyah as a spiritual discipline.
Reverence
- Handle the mushaf with wudu (ideally).
- Do not place it on the floor.
- Do not talk unrelated business while the mushaf is open.
Humility
- Do not compete with others’ hifz pace.
- Do not display your memorization for praise.
- Seek correction gratefully.
Continuity
- A memorizer does not finish. Revision is the lifelong act.
- Teach when you’re ready. Teaching strengthens retention.
