Answer first
Sheikh Maher Al-Muaiqly is a Saudi imam who has led prayers at both Masjid Al-Haram in Makkah and Masjid Al-Nabawi in Madinah — a rare distinction. His measured pace, crystalline pronunciation, and restrained emotional delivery have made him the preferred choice for memorizers who want precision without the austerity of Al-Husary or the performance-feel of mujawwad recordings.
Biography
Born in Madinah in 1969, Al-Muaiqly earned his PhD in Tafsir from Umm Al-Qura University. He was appointed to lead prayers at Masjid Al-Nabawi in 2005 and at Masjid Al-Haram in 2007. He is especially admired for his Witr prayers in the last ten nights of Ramadan at the Haram, which are among the most circulated Quranic audio of the past decade.
Unlike many contemporary reciters who release one “signature” Quran recording, Al-Muaiqly has released multiple complete Qurans across different years, letting memorizers hear the subtle maturation of his voice and approach.
Why memorizers choose him
- Comfortable middle pace — slower than Al-Sudais, faster than Al-Husary. Many memorizers find his speed the most imitable.
- Beautiful natural voice quality without vocal ornamentation.
- Calm, reverent delivery that matches the weight of the Quran’s content without performative emotion.
- Excellent for long review sessions — his steadiness is easy to listen to for an hour.
Best surahs to start with
- His Taraweeh recordings — frequently cited as reference versions by memorizers on forums and Reddit r/islam.
- Surah Al-Kahf — his full-surah recording is a classic for Friday revision.
- Long Juz like Al-Baqarah or Aali ‘Imran — where pacing matters over a long stretch and his steadiness shines.
When Al-Muaiqly is the right pick
- For memorizers past Juz Amma who want to move into longer surahs without losing tajweed quality.
- For evening review sessions where you want beauty without demanding energy.
- As the “third voice” after Al-Husary (first-pass) and Al-Sudais (daily review), giving your memory a well-rounded auditory anchor.
